IT DOESN'T GET EASIER THAN THIS -- opening the PowerBook 5300 and installing RAM is simply a matter of removing the keyboard and locating the right slot. You don't even have to detach any cables. Arm yourself with the only two tools you need -- an antistatic wrist strap and a Torx 8 screwdriver -- and follow these steps:
1. Work in a static-free environment (no carpets and little
humidity) if you can, and wear your wrist strap while you work.
2. With the PowerBook lid closed, take out the battery.
3. Turn the PowerBook upside down, and remove the three screws
across the center of the case's bottom.
4. Turn the PowerBook right side up, and open it out as flat as
you can.
5. Remove the keyboard by prying up its front edge, lifting it
and pulling it forward slightly. Be careful of the attached
ribbon cables.
6. Without detaching any of the keyboard's ribbon cables, set
the keyboard carefully on the PowerBook's screen.
Now you can see the memory slot on the left side of the newly exposed area near the palm rest. Whenever you install memory, be particularly careful, given that the pins in the slot are quite delicate. / Rich Wolfson
